Sustainability Starts In The Design - Building AI Infrastructure For Long-Term Performance
Resource use, environmental impacts, and operating performance need to be considered together.
A project sets an efficiency target. It announces an energy ambition. It describes a water strategy.
The useful next question is:
How will those commitments be reflected in the facility’s design and verified during operation?

Start With A Defined Outcome
The U.S. Department of Energy has identified efficiency, onsite energy, storage, and other technologies among the approaches that can help address growing data center energy requirements. Its December 2024 discussion emphasizes a range of potential solutions. DOE

What does the project aim to improve? Which operations and assets are included? What baseline will be used? Who will verify the result?

Examine The Whole Project
IOI recommends evaluating sustainability proposals alongside the facility’s other requirements.
For a cooling proposal, ask for the expected water use, electrical requirement, maintenance plan, and performance assumptions.
For an energy proposal, ask how it relates to the facility’s operating needs and how the claimed outcome will be measured.
For equipment and construction choices, ask what information is available about materials, service life, maintenance, and eventual replacement or recovery.
The objective is a transparent comparison. Each option should be evaluated against the same stated goals and project conditions.
Where The Partnership Opportunities Emerge
Consider an illustrative facility exploring heat recovery.
IOI’s proposed investigation would bring together the operator, mechanical engineers, a potential heat user, and any infrastructure provider needed to connect them.
The team should establish the proposed use, delivery requirements, timing, responsibilities, and commercial terms before presenting the concept as an operating benefit.
The same discipline applies to other sustainability partnerships.
A monitoring provider can help establish performance evidence. A treatment specialist can investigate a water requirement. An equipment service partner can support a defined maintenance or lifecycle objective.
The commercial opportunity comes from helping the customer deliver and demonstrate a specific outcome.
How Sustainability Connects To The Other Pillars
IOI evaluates sustainability across power, connectivity, land, water, workforce, policy, and capital.
That means assigning responsibility for commitments during design and preserving it through procurement, construction, commissioning, and operations.
The project needs to know who owns each target, which data will be collected, and what happens if performance falls short of expectations.
